I say, if you can’t go to America, bring America to you. This is what I did this past weekend when I went to Piura to pick up a bed and get some medical work done.
On Saturday (don’t worry Peace Corps, I called the out of site hotline), I went and saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie. In ENGLISH. This is the closest movie theatre to me in a ten hour radius. I originally thought Avatar would be pretty cool to see, but sorry James Cameron, it was in Spanish and I was not in the mood. I completely forgot that Guy Ritchie directed it! That’s why I thought it was so good. Before the movie, I bought popcorn AND a fountain soda and I’m telling you- for those two blissful hours- I could have been in America and there wouldn’t have been a difference. Robert Downey Jr. was great! He’s aged a lot but he must have worked out hardcore because he was ripped.
After the movie, I met up with some other PC volunteers from an older group who were in Piura for the night to celebrate one of their birthday’s at a pizza restaurant. This day seriously could not have gotten any better. I ordered a vegetarian pizza and downed it with vigor while drinking a glass of chilled red wine (all wine is served cold here). I can tell you without a doubt- pizza is the food I probably miss the most here (other than hummus, falafel, salads, and bagels) and it was so good to eat that cheesy-tomatoey-doughy goodness.
This might not sound that interesting you all- but for me- this was a very out of the ordinary day that I hope to recreate once again sometime in the future.
Im so happy you actually got to see a movie!
